News from Afghanistan

The new Chief Justice of the Afghan Supreme Court turns out to be just as psychotic as the Taliban. Fazal Hadi Shinwari who was appointed by Hamid Karzai has an unusual judicial philosophy. Among them are his ban on cable television, wanting to close co-ed schools, amputation of hands and stoning to death thieves and adulterers, and the death penalty for two journalists for making "blasphemous" remarks. Plus, "up to 60% of deputies in the lower house, are directly or indirectly connected to current and past human rights abuses."
